After a long time away from home, it is always amazing to make it home again finally. Especially in my job where you spend many months away, home becomes your vacation. It's a tough chore or task to figure out how to fully optimize your time once you are back home. For me my normal routine is to re-center myself well decompressing from the journey that I just embarked upon. There are many ways to do this. Decompressing is necessary, especially when you live a life as public as I do. What you do with this time will have far reaching effects on your future travels, your mindset and abilities on your trip. Here is a list of suggestions of things to do to re-center yourself as you return home from your vacation.
1) Fasting: for me, I need to empty out my system and prepare my body to heal and to de-stress after the adventure from which I am returning. Fasting is an amazing way to re-energize your body, mind and spirit. There are many fake rules on what fasting is online, but here is what I do to centralize myself.
-take it easy: don't overwhelm yourself if you're hungry it's OK to have a small snack. The main roll here is no sugar.
2) Exercise: Light exercise is a great way to keep your mind off of food while you are fasting. It's amazing. What a walk around the block can do for your body and for your soul = bonus points. If you live near the woods. Nature has a way of causing our minds to ease and bringing us back to the moment. Let alone the benefits of sun exposure, and vitamin D.
3) Probiotics: Kimchi and sauerkraut are a staple of my fasting routine. These add the good bacteria back into your system that will help clear your digestion. They are both calorie free or at least contain insignificant amount of calories and will help your body and mind feel a little less stressed with hunger, burn more fat, and utilize more ketones like BHB (beta-hydroxy buterate).
4) Sleep: My whole life I discounted the importance of sleep. The point of fasting is to repair and re-energize your body; This is sleeps function as well. Combining sleep with fasting is an ultra powerful way to rejuvenate your body, mind and soul. Every single health and well-being, guru article or website that you read, mentions the absolute necessity of a good nights rest. Ignore this at your own peril.
5) Meditation: This is my achiles heel. I always have meditation on my list for the day. The problem is that, even though it sounds easy to do 10 minutes of meditating. It actually proves quite difficult. 10 minutes is not that long but for some reason, it sounds like forever when you think about meditation. If you think about it, though, that is exactly the reason for meditating. To slow your mind down, to pay less attention to the world around you, and focus solely on you and your inner thoughts and your inner body functions. I don't do it every day, but when I do my days run smoother with less anxiety.
6) Cold Therapy: JUST DO IT! My friends know that I am cold therapy obsessed. This does not mean that every day I take a cold shower or jump in cold water, because in many ways, I am still a weak helpless soul. EVERY single time I jump in cold water or take a cold shower, I do everything in my power to not do it. Yes, cold is uncomfortable. Yes sometimes it even hurts. But that is the point, you have to get through the uncomfortable part of it and that's where your physical and mental well-being grows. Proving to yourself that you can do something that is uncomfortable but you know is good for you.
These are six easy steps to take to re-acclimate yourself to the normal life at home. Whether you've been traveling for just a couple weeks or for a couple months, these six steps will help re-orient you.
